Recruiting Sergeant, 14 Spon St This had a public house license from probably before 1808 until 1926, with Mary Smith being the licensee from 1834, when her husband John died, until her own death in 1850. However, in 1835 the Pigot's directory of that year lists Mary Smith under the heading Retailers of Beer, whereas the same directory in 1828 had listed the Recruiting Sergeant under Taverns.
