Walsgrave (Lowe)

Address:Walsgrave
Became:Cock Inn
Censuses described the location of these premises as near Tusses Bridge, Sowe. It was, in fact, a BEERHOUSE. In the 1851 census Francis Lowe is 55 and a grocer in Sowe. In 1861 this is called 'The Cock Public House and Grocer's Shop', run by Francis Lowe (a boatman) and his wife, Hannah. Hannah died in 1854, followed by Francis in 1866, and their son, Francis Thomas Lowe, continued running the pub. However, in September 1871 "Mr. Francis Lowe, of the Cock Inn, Sowe" approached Superintendent Palmer in a "state of drunkenness", and was hence refused the granting of his license. With thanks to Susan Lomas for further information, we now also know that Francis Lowe, her Great-Great-Great Grandfather, married Hannah Worthy in 1826 at Holy Trinity, Coventry. Hannah was the daughter of Thomas Worthy, who established The Greyhound at Sutton Stop, and in his will of 1825 she was left property, including a beer house on Hawkesbury Lane.

LICENSEES:

1851 - 1866 Francis Lowe (died 1866) 1866 - 1871 Francis Thomas Lowe (son of Francis)
