These premises have been known by different names during their history: | FROM | TO | NAME |
c1850 | 1872 | FREEHOLD TAVERN
1872 | c1991 | FREEMASONS TAVERN
Until 1871-72 this was the FREEHOLD TAVERN, so the early history of this pub is found under that name.
In 1879 the Freemasons' was recorded as a Beerhouse.
In c1991 the pub closed to become a Jalalabad Temple. The original freemasons were stone masons in mediaeval Europe who operated a closed shop system. They used secret signs to exclude what would now be called cowboy builders. In modern times the freemasons are members of a fraternal society that does a certain amount of charitable work.
