This pub was named after a gate in the Abbott of Coventry's hunting park of Whitmore Park. There are tales of the premises being used as a hospital for soldiers returning from the Crimean War.
The first mention of this pub in Lockhurst Lane, Foleshill, is c1745. The pub was actually located in an unnamed road off Lockhurst Lane, later to become Parkgate Road.
On Saturday 16th February 1895 a serious fire consumed much of the property, made worse by having a thatched roof. Soon after the fire the pub was put up for auction and in April Thomas Gossage took over the license from Deborah Broom and turned the pub into a licensed hotel - to henceforth be known as the Park Gate Hotel. | |||
