Shire Horse, Caradoc Close

This was a large modern pub built next to a block of flats in 1971. The pub was constantly plagued by violence, arson attempts, stabbings, etc., including in April 1987 when the Coventry Evening Telegraph reported that on Sunday 5th an arson attack on the Shire Horse "forced the landlord and his family to flee as the place burst into flames". Despite internal renovations in 1997, it only lasted until 2003 when a huge fire finally requiring 15 to 16 fire engines saw an end to this pub. It was finally demolished in 2005 to avoid the risk of loss of life due to regular arson attacks.
Shire horses are the heaviest of all English draught breeds. They evolved from the 'Great Horse' of medieval times when they carried a man in full armour. It is an immensely powerful horse but has a docile temperament. Shire horses are particularly associated with brewery deliveries.
