This name comes from a coin. The half sovereign was Britain's standard gold coin from 1817 to 1917, with a value of twenty shillings, i.e one pound.
This pub was built by Thornley Kelsey of Radford Semele, their only pub in Coventry. On Thornleys being taken over by Davenports it became a Davenports pub, with a very comprehensive Davenports off licence occupying part of the site.
After being closed for some years, the Sovereign re-opened on Thursday 25th April following a huge refurbishment costing £330,000.
Previously the HALF SOVEREIGN.
