Fountain, High Street, Hillfields

Alternative Addresses:Castle Street
In 1850 this pub was used to auction 'sweet iron-bound casks, from 55 to 9 gallons each; iron furnaces and setting, 12 strike mash tub and brewing vessels, brick cooler, 15 feet by 10;... glass, delph and pewter measures, drinking tables and other effects.' Presumably this was the equipment of the licensee, William Farren. This is the only record we have of this pub.

This sign can be heraldic, referring to the Crest of the Plumber's Company and also the badge of the Master Mariners, or it can refer to a nearby spring or well. Before piped water was a part of everyday life such natural sources of water were of great importance. In Coventry this may well refer to the city's conduits.
