Fountain, Queen Street

In May 1833 the Coventry Herald reported the death "On Wednesday last, Mr. Edward Shaw, landlord of the Fountain public-house, in the Hill Fields, in this City". The following June George Shilton was moving to Fountain, described as being at the back of Canal Tavern, Dog Lane. This description, however, does not tie in with the later address of Queen Street. By 1856 the Fountain was for sale and not heard of again.

This sign can be heraldic, referring to the Crest of the Plumber's Company and also the badge of the Master Mariners, or it can refer to a nearby spring or well. Before piped water was a part of everyday life such natural sources of water were of great importance. In Coventry this may well refer to the city's conduits.
