George and Dragon, 35 Cow Lane
This pub appears in the 1861 census, but in January 1862 the pub and all its contents were up for auction. This name originally referred to St. George, the patron saint of England (often coupled with the dragon). Since 1714, George has been a kingly name in England, six different kings having borne it. | |||
