Raven, Spon Street
This bird was sacred to the Druids and was known in Norse mythology as Woden's bird. King Arthur was reputedly changed into a raven. The commonest belief about the bird is that it is an omen of something unpleasant. Nevertheless, the bird features in some coats of arms and it is said that in the late seventeenth century the sign indicated Jacobite sympathies on the part of an innkeeper. | |||
