In 1618 Coventry Corporation leased the Shoulder of Mutton close to the end of the causeway to Allesley to William Gibbons. It had previously been leased by Thomas Stiffe.


A shoulder of mutton was a popular dish at inns. In some inns it may have indicated that the innkeeper was also the local butcher.
