This earliest record found yet for this pub is from Piercy's Coventry Gazette, 7th March 1778, for an auction "at the House of Mrs. Shaw, situate in Mill-Lane . . . known by the Sign of the Sword-and-Mace".
The last mention found is of Joseph Barton leaving West Orchard to take the Sword and Mace, in Mill-Lane, in February 1805. This name refers either to civic regalia or royal regalia. | |||
