On the 27th October 1825 Harry Chetham advertised his newly opened WINE AND SPIRIT MERCHANT'S, next door to Thomas Porter, a Taylor. This was on the north side of Earl Street, opposite Much Park Street.
Occasionally referred to as the BOARD, virtually all newspaper advertisements used the name WINE AND SPIRIT VAULTS.
After 20 years in the trade, Harry began to advertise the pub's declining business and recommended John Johnson to take over the licence, which he did in September 1846.
In May 1851 John George Checketts took over this pub's license, and on the 25th July 1851 he put up the first of several advertisements in the local newspapers giving this pub the new name of THE MARBLE HALL.
