In the 1841 census John Essex is a watchmaker in Summerland Place, The Butts. Ten years later he is a watchmaker and victualler in Butts Lane. In 1861 he is a victualler at 63 Butts Lane and in 1871 we learn that he is a watch finisher and victualler at the Russell Arms, 63 and 64 Butts. This is an interesting sequence as it gives an example how, over a period of 40 years, someone goes from being a tradesman, to combining that with running a beerhouse, to combining that trade with running a proper, named, public house. | |||
