Bull and Anchor, 37 Bishop Street
These premises have been known by different names during their history: | FROM | TO | NAME |
1748 | ? | CROWN AND ANCHOR | |
1774 | 1869 | BULL AND ANCHOR
1858 | 1860 | RUTLAND ARMS | |
1869 | 1931 | OLDE BULL AND ANCHOR
This pub was established by 1748 as the CROWN AND ANCHOR, then from around 1774 became the BULL AND ANCHOR. It is marked on the 1851 Health Map, however, as the BULLS HEAD AND ANCHOR - probably incorrectly being confused with the BULLS HEAD on the opposite side of the street.
When B. G. Holton took possession of the pub in 1858 he renamed it the RUTLAND ARMS - a name only lasting two years.
By 1869 the Bull and Anchor began to be known as the OLDE BULL AND ANCHOR.
