Until August 1847 this was a beer-shop, but at that date was granted a victuallers' license.
In the 1851 census Joseph Taylor is listed as a 76 year-old widowed licensed victualler at the Fountain Tavern, Spon Street. The 1851 Board of Health map also shows the Fountain at number 31. Later, the 1888 map shows the MECHANICS ARMS to be next door at No.30, long after the Fountain had reverted to a dwelling. This sign can be heraldic, referring to the Crest of the Plumber's Company and also the badge of the Master Mariners, or it can refer to a nearby spring or well. Before piped water was a part of everyday life such natural sources of water were of great importance. In Coventry this may well refer to the city's conduits. | |||
