Longford Engine This seems to have been a reference to a local steam engine, perhaps for pit winding or water raising. Renamed in 1985 to the CANAL BOAT, the current name harks back to the earlier names of the pub - first the FIRE ENGINE, followed by the ENGINE INN and the OLD ENGINE INN.
