Stag, 20 Bishop Street
These premises have been known by different names during their history: | FROM | TO | NAME |
1822 | 1858 | STAG | |
1835 | ? | BEERHOUSE | |
1858 | 2010 | OLD STAG | |
In 1835 this was a BEERHOUSE.
When William Hill took over the license in 1858 it became the OLD STAG.
In 2010 the pub was sold by Punch Taverns to the next door funeral directors, A. Pargetter & Son, and it reopened as THE STAG, a free house under new licensees, Clive Hunt and Paul Barrow. The stag is a male red deer in its prime, i.e. in its fifth year. Most of the signs refer to hunts, stag hunting having been a favourite royal sport in the past. Occasionally it is a heraldic reference. | |||
