Star and Garter, 39 Albert Street

In October 1854 the Star and Garter was one of "two freehold messuages" being auctioned, both described as being "well fitted up with Marble Chimney Pieces, Register and Over Grates, Gas Fittings. and Dwarf Cupboards, and have been built within the last two years." The pub closed on 10th May 1970.

A reference to the Most Noble order of the Garter, the highest order of knighthood in Britain. Instituted by Edward III about 1348, with the motto 'Honi soit qui mal y pense', 'shamed be whoever thinks ill of it'. The order is limited to the sovereign, other members of the royal family, and twenty-five knights. The star forms part of the insignia.
