The bottom of Burges in 1927, with Well Street in the distance viewed from Hales Street, here showing buildings before the demolition for the new Corporation Street between late 1927 and early 1929. The Unicorn occupied the building here shown as W.H. Crofts on the left, and the building on the corner was the Wine Lodge, formerly the Eagle Vaults. (See the 1914 town planning map below.)
Until 1876 this was the EAGLE VAULTS. In July of that year Charles Smith advertised these premises as having undergone alterations and changed the name to the WINE LODGE. To facilitate the building of the new Corporation Street the last two months of 1927 saw the demolition of the buildings around the Wine Lodge. However, it was stated that the pub itself would be kept open until its replacement was built and ready for use. The new WINE LODGE took its place nearby on the corner of Burges and Corporation Street, opening in April 1929. Wonderful 1919 view of the pub from Well Street. (Photo courtesy of David Fry.) A planning map of 1914 proposing the building of the yet unnamed Corporation Street and how it would affect the bottom of the Burges, leading to the demolition in 1927-29 of the original Wine Lodge and adjacent buildings. | |||
