Hastings Tavern, 30 Clay Lane
Presumably this refers to the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The pub opened on 19th April 1924.
In 1983 Chris Arnott said that "Mitchells and Butler rarely miss a trick. When a pub called the Hastings was ripe for revamping, they produced a 'Battle Theme' lounge, complete with Norman arches, a mock portcullis, crossed swords and axes, and the odd Bayeux Tapestry or two". The pub doesn't date from then! | |||
