In November 1871 Henry Brown, who had run a WINE AND SPIRIT VAULTS on these premises since 1862, handed over the license to William Norris, late of the Thistle Inn, West Orchard. Norris repeatedly advertised his premises as THE BOARD, but after just three months, February 1872, the adverts dried up and no more is heard from him.
The next we hear is when William Brennand takes the license in 1974 and renames the pub the SPOTTED DOG. Board means 'to board intoxicating liquor'. In some instances the need for a premises to have 'a board', that is a sign board, suggested this name, as they did in fact display a blank board. However, generally the board identified a person selling beer from their home; in other words a beer-house under the 1839 Beerhouse Act, the real origin of the 'public house'. | |||
