Swanswell Stores, Hales Street
These premises have been known by different names during their history: | FROM | TO | NAME |
1858 | 1926 | SWANSWELL STORES
1894 | 1998 | SWANSWELL HOTEL
1998 | 1999 | INN PLACE | |
In the 68 years from the opening of these premises as a wine and spirit, and beer merchant's by John Porter in 1858, until the retirement of John Dowse in 1926, there were only two licenses - with a small exception of three months while executors took care of business after John Porter's death in 1893.
From soon after John Dowse took over in 1894 these premises were also referred to as the SWANSWELL HOTEL, although the SWANSWELL STORES name persisted until Dowse retired. This name refers to a local pool, the Swanswell, which was the source of much of the water used in ancient Coventry.
